Mark 12:41-44

1. Write an explanation of how the widow lived what the Savior taught in Mark 12:28-30.

In these verses, Christ teaches that the first commandment is to love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. When the widow comes and gives her offering, Christ says that she has given all that she has. This shows that she is following the first great commandment, because she is giving all that she has to God. Not only is she giving him all that she has, but she is showing her faith and trust in him that he will prepare a way for her to continue living without her savings.

2. Even thought the widow gave less money than wealthier people gave, according to Mark 12:44, how much of what she had did she give? Write a paragraph describing what this teaches about what constitutes an acceptable offering to the Lord. How does 2 Nephi 25:23 apply to what the widow did?

According to verse 44, the widow gave “all that she had, even all her living.” In the New Testament, we constantly read that in order to be a true disciple of Christ, we need to be willing to sacrifice all that we have. The widow is following this principle. This teaches us that an acceptable offering unto the Lord is to give up what we need, not just what is our abundance. In order to give an acceptable offering, we also must take into account or spirit and intent with which we give. The widow’s sacrifice was acceptable because she gave all that she was capable of giving.

2 Nephi 25:23 says, “For we labor diligently to write, to persuade out children, and also our brethren, to believe in Christ, and to be reconciled to God; for we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all that we can do.” The widow has given all that she has and has done all that she can do, and she recognizes that it is by grace that she is able to be saved, even though she can’t monetarily contribute as much as others can.

3. Write two or three sentences describing a way, aside from the donation of money, that you could better follow the widow’s example of sacrifice and obedience.

I can better follow the example of the widows sacrifice and obedience by remembering that I shouldn’t be selfish in everything that I do. I can remember that setting an example can set a trend for others to notice.
